MLC Tennis Hot Shots

What Is MLC Tennis Hot Shots?

Kids Tennis Lessons

MLC Tennis Hot Shots

The MLC Tennis Hot Shots is a program developed by Tennis Australia to re-invigorate the participation in tennis at grass roots level.

Kids Tennis Rackets

Tennis Australia describe the program as follows:

MLC Tennis Hot Shots is Tennis Australia’s official kids’ starter program for children aged 5-12 years old.
It’s for kids

Through the use of modified court sizes and low-compression balls, kids learn to serve, rally and score in a game that is appropriate to their developmental needs.

Building them up for bigger and better things
Children progress through the three developmental stages:

Red
Orange
Green

At each stage, ball compression and court size increases in line with players’ development. This gradual progression improves players’ skills and prepares them to play on a full-size court with a yellow ball.

Learn more about the three developmental stages

At MLC Tennis Hot Shots, children will:

play with modified equipment that is appropriate to their age, size and ability
meet new friends, have fun and stay healthy
develop new skills and coordination
have the opportunity to play in challenge events where all players receive a participation gift
be presented with a T-shirt when they enrol for one term of MLC Tennis Hot Shots
graduate to playing on a full-size court through the “learning to play” pathway.

Is MLC Tennis Hot Shots Right For My Child?

This is a vexed question, as most children are very self conscious when they start any new activity. They don’t like to fail at anything, hence they may resist trying new things. Also being thrown into another group situation like school in their  recreation time may upset them.  You can only try it. If your child refuses to cooperate with the coach, you would be advised to terminate immediately. You will at least get them a new t shirt and perhaps a hat from signing them up.

How Good Are The MLC Tennis Hot Shots Coach’s

Tennis coach’s in the main are frustrated players who perhaps wasted their youth pursuing a dream of professional tennis and are now stuck teaching to earn their living, so they can be a little short on diplomacy and good court side manner.  Tennis Australia have specific training for MCL Hot Shots facilitators, so there is a fair chance your child will get value out of some aspect of the training if the coach sticks to the program.

On the whole I think the program is well intentioned, but the quality of the coach is the big question mark. I advise all parents to buy some soft tennis balls and a racket of their own and play with your child before you subject them to regimented tennis classes. You can get all the equipment you need to get your child started in tennis online and delivered including Tennis Racquets

Tennis can be game for life if your child can get some early success at hitting the ball and being the center of your attention for awhile. It can also be a bit of an obsession for some parents to see their child succeed at tennis. What ever happens, it is best to remember that it is a sport and good for building character in a child.

SYMPTOMS OF TENNIS ELBOW

How Often Should I Restring My Tennis Racket

Deciding when you need to restring your tennis racket can be quite a quandary. To make things even more complicated there are over 500 different brands and types of tennis strings to choose from when you do decide to restring your racket.

So what should you do?

How often you restring will depend If you are a pro, a college player, a top junior or a competitive social player. The more you play and the more pressure you put on yourself to perform will dictate your restringing time line. The reason is that you want your racket to perform in sync with your well honed tennis skills.

Tennis racket strings start to lose tension from the very time your stringer as finished your restring. You may have had it strung at 62 pounds, but after a few hours it may be down to 61 pounds. This drop in tension can mean the difference between finding the line or shooting long. The reason is that as string tension deteriorates, the strings flex more upon impact. This cushions the ball more, reducing compression against the strings, creating more rebound and effectively more power. More than you bargained for generally resulting in an over hit.

Pros and elite college players will want to restring before every practice and match. They will sometimes have up to 10 rackets strung every day. There is a rumour around the WTA that Venus Williams has 12 rackets freshly strung everyday of a tournament.

If the pros do it regularly there must be something to be gained. Most pros have a string sponsor and college players have their athletic department pick up the tab. For juniors and social players it is another story. A restring will cost anywhere from $20 to $70 depending on brand and type of tennis string.

So the solution to the question about how often you should restring your tennis racket will depend on how serious you are about your stroke quality, how passionate you are about your game and how deep your pockets are to support your tennis habit.

My advice is that if you would like to maintain some consistency in your tennis game, then you should restring as often as possible. Buy a sturdy tennis restringing machine and learn to restring your own rackets. This will save you heaps and add to your tennis experience.

Tennis Techniques

Tennis Techniques For Cross Training

Anticipation and reaction time are essential for good singles play. To help develop these attributes in your young tennis athlete, I suggest some dance lessons including hip-hop, where they are exposed to choreography as a group. Watching and keeping time with others will help a youngster develop very quickly. The dancers to ”All The Singles Ladies” and “My Boy Friends Back”, may not dress appropriately, but the skills learned are very valuable. Unfortunately I had to remove the videos due to copy right, but you can find them on youtube if you search.

Different Tennis Techniques

Back in the old days children in primary school were exposed to tennis techniques with group lessons where they mirrored or shadowed there teacher without hitting a ball. I for one think that this has very beneficial outcomes for learners. Even Tennis Australia has programs that involve cross training in other sports or activities like dance.

Tennis Techniques And Dance Instruction?

If you don’t have time to send your young athlete to class, then there are many DVD and Video programs for teaching dance that are very good and appropriate for children.
Had to remove the Videos because of copyright, sorry. But youtube has plenty please search.

These girls practice hip-hop as well, and will will become more and more sure footed and in control of their movements as they get older. Their tennis footwork will improve exponentially.

How to Remove a Rattle in a Tennis Racquet

Annoying rattles in your racket can be very distracting. Fix it before it drives you nuts.

This is one way to remove a the rattle sound in a tennis racquet. There are other culprits, but this is the most common. Don’t confuse the vibration sound of strings as a rattle in your racket. If you can hear the sound only on impact, it may be the strings. Try adding a vibration dampener first. Enjoy!

How often do tennis racket strings need to be replaced?

Here is a question that many ask:

“My mom got these tennis rackets a year or two ago. They’ve always looked old, and of course they haven’t gotten any better. I have a hard time hitting the ball with them because they seem hard and brittle. Do the strings need to be replaced? Would it be cheaper just to get a different racket. We don’t play for more than just fun, and we got these rackets because they were cheap. So I guess it doesn’t even matter that our rackets are bad. But I just wanted to know if they need replacing.”

Got any suggestions?
